Renewing your work permit while in Canada
If there are any changes to your current job, such as a change in pay or new responsibilities, or if you wish to work for a new employer, the conditions of your work permit will change. In such cases, you cannot work for a new employer or start a new job until you obtain a new work permit with updated conditions. However, if you have an open work permit, you can extend it as long as you are still eligible to work in Canada.
To extend or change the conditions of your work permit, you must apply online, upload electronic copies of your documents, and pay processing fees. If your work permit expires while your application is being processed, you may continue working under the same conditions as your current or expired permit until a decision is made on your application.
IRCC will send you a letter confirming your eligibility to continue working under the same conditions as your original work permit while your application is being processed. If your work permit has already expired, you must stop working in Canada. However, you may be able to restore your status as a worker by applying within 90 days of losing your status, meeting the requirements for your stay, and meeting all the conditions listed on your expired permit.
It’s worth noting that you cannot extend your work permit beyond your passport’s expiry date. If you’re unsure about the process of renewing or extending your permit, it’s recommended that you seek the assistance of an experienced Canadian immigration lawyer. At Cohen Immigration Law, our team of lawyers can help you understand your situation and guide you through the application process.
